How to Install and Replace the Dell Hard Drive & Caddy

One of the hard drive caddies in my Dell Latitude D630 laptop has been determined to be faulty (although it seems to work fine, it will not pass a maintenance test). I have had a spare Dell D810 hard drive caddy but it was not compatible. So I needed to buy a replacement Dell D630 HDD Caddy. But the problem how to install and replace the Hard Drive & Caddy on my Dell Latitude D630 laptop has troubled me for a long time? And it has already been solved now. Today, I’d like to share the process with you.

This is a relatively simple process with Microsoft Windows 7 because it already includes Windows Backup to do the job. Also, as you appreciate, you can do it by storing the original disk image on your 149GB external hard drive (EHD). However, I'd guess this is a few years old now, so you might prefer to invest in a new terabyte drive instead. You don't say how big your laptop's drives are, but they could be 320GB or 500GB each, so you'll eventually need a 1TB or larger drive for backups.

Either way, you will need something with enough space to back up your original drive. An EHD is probably the simplest option, though I'll suggest a couple of cheaper alternatives below. You will also need a blank DVD or CD to create a System Repair disc. Well… maybe you need a DVD external case as well as.

By the way, if you want to replace the Dell D630 hinges or Dell D620 hinges, you should remove the Dell Latitude D620 / D630 LCD screen from the LCD back assembly. Unscrew the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm screws on the left and right hinge. And then, you can remove the Dell Latitude D630 / D620 hinges
